In much of the spiritual literature I’ve read, there’s a recurring idea that we are co-creators of our lives—that our thoughts help shape our reality. When you pause to reflect on that, it becomes clear: every thought, whether conscious or unconscious, positive or negative, leads to a choice. And every choice has led you to this very moment.
You might say, “But I made that choice because of them,” or “That situation forced my hand.” But the truth is, we choose. We may not always be aware we’re choosing, but we are. This is what the spiritual world calls free will—the divine gift that allows us to experience our own thoughts in action. That’s the beauty of life. But if we’re not mindful, it can also be the source of deep pain.
That’s why creating awareness around the quality of our thoughts is essential for our well-being. It’s not easy—our minds can be relentless. But the practice of mindfulness can help us notice the thoughts that aren’t aligned with our highest Self. When we realize not every thought deserves our attention or action, we begin to take our power back. We can start redirecting our minds toward thoughts that uplift and support us.
A helpful guide for checking the quality of your thoughts: follow your feelings.
Your feelings are your built-in GPS. If a thought lifts you—brings peace, clarity, or even a subtle sense of ease—that’s your inner wisdom saying, yes, this way. But if a thought creates tension, anxiety, or dis-ease, it’s a sign you may be off course. Your emotions are gentle messengers. When you learn to listen, they’ll guide you back to alignment—back to your Self.
This work matters—not just here, but in the life beyond.
Something my spiritual teachers have taught me is that the quality of our thoughts continues to matter when we return to our spirit form. People often ask what awaits us after this life. There are many theories—heaven, hell, something in between. But from what I’ve learned, we are still co-creators on the other side, too.
The difference? There is no gap. Here, there’s often a delay between thought and experience. But in the spiritual realm, thought becomes reality instantly. Which makes me doubly aware of just how powerful our thoughts really are.
So if our thoughts truly shape our lives—here and beyond—then choosing them wisely becomes one of the most important things we can do.
A thought worth carrying with you: “Your feelings are your built-in GPS.”
