Building Community Through Yoga

Since the beginning of my yoga career ten years ago, I have had a sense that building a community was important and that yoga was a great vehicle for doing it. One of the reasons for this is because of my experiences during my first 200-hour yoga teacher training. We were a group of approximately 15 women from all walks of life who came together for a common purpose and through that purpose we learned how to accept and love each other.

As we listened to each other’s stories we began to understand our differences and realized our commonalities. As we interacted, we began to appreciate our vastly different backgrounds while simultaneously connecting through our shared experiences of being human. This is the power of building community.

This month I am hosting a Summer Solstice Celebration at my house on June 21, 2022.

What is the purpose of this gathering? The purpose is to celebrate the longest day of the year, the beginning of summer (whoo-hoo!) and to help build community through yoga. My intention is to create a joyful, beautiful celebration that we will share through the practice of yoga, good food and music. Food and music are also powerful channels for building community!

The real beauty of building community is this: even though the event that creates community ends (and we may not ever see each other again), the experiences we share are like threads in a tapestry-they will always be there. Moreover, the more we participant in building community, the more we expand and grow as individuals.
